Leaders don’t hoard knowledge

Do you share your knowledge and understanding of your industry, your marketplace, and your business with your employees?

You should be. One the big problems in any company is the hoarding of information by employees. It gives them power over your organization, which can lead to a number of profit-killing behaviors.

Similarly, many business owners hoard information for…well…whatever reason. Sensitive information about yourself or your employees clearly shouldn’t ever be shared. Information regarding acquisitions also needs to be handled judiciously, and client information also needs to be shared with discretion among your employees.

But non-sensitive information about your industry, marketplace, and business? Often, leaders don’t share this kind of knowledge because of their desire to hold on to power: “If I know more than my team, then I validate my position.” I know, no one says that out loud, or even thinks it, but that’s the real reason why many business owners won’t educate their employees.” Ugh.

The less your employees know, the worse it is for everyone. Equip them to be creative; let them be smarter than you. Let them come up with better ideas than you; you’ll increase productivity across the board, and their success will drive your success.

Go get 'em!
