How getting meaner can help you succeed

I was pathetic.

I spent most of my freshman year at Navy so low on the football depth chart that I wasn’t even listed in the program.

Then my sophomore year, out of the blue, I was called up to the travel squad during Notre Dame week. Wow, was I excited!!

As the season moved along, I got into a few games (enough for friends from home to see me on TV), but I never impressed our coaches enough to get more playing time.

One day our head coach, Gary Tranquill, told me what my problem was: “Ingar, I need you to get meaner.”

It’s not that I wasn’t physical or that I didn’t work hard. The problem was that I didn’t have a consistent “anger” — for lack of a better word — that I applied throughout practice and games, an intensity that separates champions from everyone else.
