How to use your labor force more efficiently

Wash the big bowls by hand.

That’s the “secret” I taught my children for conserving their labor when it comes to washing dishes.

What do I mean? In your typical, modern dishwasher, bowls take up more volume than plates, glasses, mugs, etc.

A simple example: If the dishwasher is full and you still have two glasses to wash, pull out the bowl, put the two glasses in, and then wash the bowl by hand. That way, you wash one bowl by hand instead of two glasses.

Not only do you save labor, but you also wind up using less water because you’re washing fewer dishes by hand.
