Chalk Talk: Effect of Recession on Coaching?

My friend and fellow Trustee at the US Naval Academy Alumni Association, Joe Moreno, posted the following question. By the way, Joe is the founder of a very cool company named Adjix, which should be a key component of your Twitter toolbox! Thanks for the question, Joe:
How has the current recession affected the coaching industry? What do you
tell executives, in this environment, since training is sometimes one of the
first expenses to be cut?

Coaching is not training. Arguably, coaching is far more important in an economic downturn because it's the companies that get much better at execution during this period that will have the greatest growth during the recovery. I also wrote about this in my last WBJ column. Training develops new skills or reinforces existing ones; strategic coaching (what we do) helps clients get better strategies, better effectiveness, and better execution. That speaks for itself; whereas training may have to be put on the back-burner while your company focuses on its knitting, coaching is what helps a business leader understand what his/her knitting is. The video and description on this page can help clarify this even more.
